Who they are

Gladys, 75, is a volunteer at a city church that opens a food pantry twice a month, two hours at a time, to anyone who needs it. She is representative of the many small, hyper-local, volunteer-led pantries that sit outside formal networks.

Goal

Distribute all of the food donated by the congregation at each scheduled distribution time.

Digital capability

Owns an iPad, uses a flip phone, and has wifi at home and at the church.

Challenges

Limited refrigeration and storage; few volunteers, most with limited capacity. The pantry isn’t promoted widely because of volunteer skills and time, and it has no succession plan for when current volunteers step back.
